Inside the Life and Times of D’Banj: A Reflective Journey on Fame, Music, and Don Jazzy
In a candid reflection, D’Banj, one of Nigeria’s most iconic artists, opens up about his rise to fame, his impact on Afrobeats, and the role that Don Jazzy played in shaping his career.
“You see, in my prime I make over 10 million naira in a week, I was so hot that, I was the gateway to what you now call Afrobeats. Men like Kanye West would pick up their phone, call me and Don Jazzy to know what the African music market was like,” D’Banj reminisces.
His collaboration with Snoop Dogg was a defining moment in his career. “I made one of the best music collaborations with Snoop Dogg who calls me his ‘cousin’ because our vibes were beyond just music.” Beyond the music, D’Banj was also a magnet for some of Nigeria’s most famous faces. “Genevieve Nnaji, Ini Edo and a host of other kokolets all wanted the Koko but as a man of peace, the Koko must not go round… Hehehe you know what I mean.”
Reflecting on the high life, D’Banj recalls, “I would link up with my Senegalese brother Akon so we can ball in Miami, fly first class to Dubai in my Versace shades and suit.”
However, fame and fortune came with its challenges. D’Banj admits that his decision to part ways with Don Jazzy, who was instrumental in the success of Mo’Hits, was a turning point. “It all fell apart when I told Don Jazzy I can do it alone because we both made Mo’Hits become a reality.”
D’Banj acknowledges the unique synergy he had with Don Jazzy and the impact it had on his music. “Over time, I haven’t found anyone who could give me those beats like Don Baba J used to give me, those beats were a banger that moulded my charisma as an entertainer.”
Today, D’Banj looks back with appreciation for Don Jazzy’s enduring influence and contributions to the music industry. “I have watched Don Baba J proven his worth over time as he has raised two generations of artists. We have made peace and I hope to work with him again because only him understands what makes me who I am.”
In a poignant closing, D’Banj reflects on the importance of key figures in one’s journey. “I have realised in life, some persons come into your life as a beacon of light that enhances your potentials and Don Jazzy is one of them.”
It’s clear that for D’Banj, the legacy of Mo’Hits and his bond with Don Jazzy remain a significant chapter in his story—a chapter he hopes to revisit once more.
