Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, has inaugurated its new president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, following a peaceful election last month. This milestone event strengthens Somaliland’s quest for international recognition, which has been ongoing for over three decades.

In his inaugural speech, President Abdullahi emphasized the importance of renewing relations with the rest of the world to create a new Somaliland contributing to regional security, including the Red Sea ¹. The 69-year-old leader from the opposition Waddani Party won over 50% of the votes, defeating incumbent President Bihi.

The electoral commission verified the results, highlighting the significant voter turnout and peaceful nature of the election as evidence of Somaliland’s democratic strength. The international community, including the United States, has congratulated President Abdullahi on his victory and acknowledged Somaliland’s progress towards democracy.

Despite its stable political climate and functional government, currency, and security forces, Somaliland remains unrecognized by the African Union, the United Nations, or any other nation as a sovereign state. Somalia continues to claim Somaliland as part of its territory.

President Abdullahi’s leadership faces significant challenges, including tackling clashes in the Sool region and pursuing international recognition. His administration has also vowed to reassess regional agreements with Ethiopia to ensure they serve Somaliland’s strategic interests.

As Somaliland embarks on this new era, its commitment to democracy, stability, and international cooperation will be crucial in achieving its aspirations for recognition and regional security.
