Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio Honored by U.S. Foreign Policy Association
On Thursday, September 26, 2024, Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, was awarded the prestigious Foreign Policy Association Medal during the 2024 World Leadership Forum Dinner in New York. This recognition celebrates President Bio’s exceptional leadership on both the national and global stage, along with his efforts to bring transformative progress to Sierra Leone.
During his acceptance speech, President Bio expressed deep appreciation for the honor, emphasizing that it reflects Sierra Leone’s growing achievements. He acknowledged the country’s journey through challenges while staying dedicated to democratic principles and inclusive governance.
“Though democracy is not perfect, it remains the most humane and just form of governance,” President Bio remarked. “Leadership is fundamentally about service. Our greatest task as leaders is to build trust, bridge gaps between people and institutions, and renew the belief that governance should always serve the common good.”
President Bio highlighted some key accomplishments of his administration, including promoting a free press, enacting the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act, and developing a comprehensive national plan for Sierra Leone’s growth. He also stressed Sierra Leone’s active engagement in global peace and security as a current member of the United Nations Security Council, despite the nation’s small size.
“Leadership is a responsibility we hold in trust for the people,” he continued. “True leadership lifts people up, unites them, and advances justice. We will be judged not by the positions we hold but by the impact we have on the lives of those we serve.”
This award serves as international recognition not only of President Bio’s domestic successes but also of his contributions to global discourse. Since its founding in 1918, the Foreign Policy Association has been dedicated to promoting understanding and informed perspectives on U.S. foreign policy and global issues.
